Best Day Trips from NYC for a Weekend Feel in Just One Day

Montauk, NY

Sometimes the best kind of reset doesn’t require booking a flight or even spending the night away. One of my favorite things about living near New York City is how accessible a change of scenery can be, no matter which direction you go in. You can experience waterfront towns, mountain roads, quiet cafes, hiking trails, and places that somehow feel much farther away than just a day trip from NYC.

To help you plan your next escape from the city, I’ve put together a list of day trips from NYC I’ve enjoyed that I find myself recommending over and over again. Places with small-town charm, scenic views, a slower pace, and the kind of atmosphere that can make a single day feel like a weekend away.

Best Day Trips from NYC

Day Trips from NYC Within 1 Hour

Hoboken, nj

Hoboken may technically be just across from Manhattan, but it somehow manages to feel a bit calmer and slower than the city almost immediately. The waterfront walks along the Hudson River make it well worth the visit to catch that epic NYC skyline view.

It’s one of my favorite places to go for a slower morning, walks along the water, and exploring small shops, which always seem to be popping up. The best part of it all is that it doesn’t require a lot of planning. Take the PATH train in from Manhattan, and you can be in Hoboken in as little as 10 minutes.

BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham, robbinsville TOWNSHIP, nj

One of the most unexpected day trips near NYC is this stunning Hindu temple in New Jersey, which transports you immediately. The level of detail in the marble architecture is incredible, and visiting feels unlike anything else this close to the city (or the United States!).

Red Bank, nj

Red Bank has the kind of downtown that makes you want to spend the entire afternoon wandering without much of a plan. The streets are lined with cafes, bookstores, boutiques, and restaurants, while the nearby riverfront adds to the slower pace that makes it feel far removed from NYC. It’s one of those places that feels like an easy weekend-style day trip without needing to go very far.

Cold Spring, ny

Cold Spring is one of those places I recommend constantly because it works in almost every season. You have the riverfront, mountain views, hiking trails, antique shops, cafes, and one of the easiest train rides from NYC.

It’s especially beautiful in fall, but honestly feels cozy year-round.

Beacon, ny

Beacon blends art, nature, and small-town energy in a way that feels very Hudson Valley. Between Dia Beacon, the cafes, Main Street, and nearby hiking, it’s one of the easiest day trips to build an entire day around.

Storm King Art Center, NEW windsor, ny

Storm King feels more like an experience than a museum. Massive sculptures sit across rolling hills and open landscapes, making it one of the most visually inspiring places near NYC.

You can dedicate an entire day to just walking the grounds slowly.

Day Trips from NYC Within 1 to 2 Hours

New Paltz, NY

New Paltz is one of the best day trips from NYC for nature lovers. The surrounding mountains, hiking trails, cliffs, and forests make it feel much farther from the city than it actually is.

The nearby Mohonk Preserve is especially beautiful for hiking and scenic overlooks.

Kingston & Woodstock, NY

I like pairing Kingston and Woodstock together because they each bring something different. Kingston has more of a historic waterfront and creative city feel, while Woodstock is a bit more artsy, relaxed, and feels more like a mountain town.

Together, they make one of the best slower-paced weekend-style day trips from NYC.

Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphia feels completely different from NYC despite being relatively close. The historic streets, slower pace, food scene, and walkability make it one of my favorite city escapes from NYC.

It’s especially great if you want a full-day itinerary without needing a car much once you arrive.

TANNERSVILLE & Hunter, NY

This part of the Catskills always feels like a proper escape from the city. Between mountain views, winding roads, and waterfalls, this entire area has a quieter energy.

Kaaterskill Falls in Hunter is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in New York State and is worth seeing at least once.

Hudson, NY

Hudson feels elevated in a very quiet way. It’s filled with antique stores, design shops, wine bars, bookstores, and beautifully curated spaces that make wandering around feel like the entire point of the trip.

This is one of my favorite places for an artistic atmosphere getaway in just one day.

Greenport, NY

Greenport feels quieter and more laid-back than most people expect from Long Island. The waterfront, wineries, seafood spots, and slower pace make it one of the best coastal day trips from NYC.

It’s best enjoyed in the warm summer months, but if you’re looking to skip peak crowds, the off-season doesn’t disappoint.

Day Trips from NYC Within 2 to 3 Hours

Cape May, NJ

Cape May can feel otherworldly. Between the Victorian homes, quiet streets, beach walks, and historic charm, it’s one of the few places near NYC that genuinely feels like stepping into another era. I especially love it outside peak summer, when the town feels calmer, and you can actually take your time wandering between cafes, the shoreline, and the colorful residential streets.

Narrowsburg, NY

Narrowsburg is the kind of small town that makes you slow down almost immediately. Sitting along the Delaware River, it has a quieter, more understated charm than some of the more popular Hudson Valley destinations. The combination of river views, small cafes, local shops, and surrounding nature makes it feel peaceful without needing much of an itinerary at all.

MontauK, NY

Montauk is one of my favorite places near NYC, especially outside the height of summer. The beaches feel calmer, the air feels different, and the entire town becomes more reflective.

It’s one of the few places near NYC that genuinely feels far away from everything.

No matter which direction you head from NYC, whether it’s toward the Catskills, the Jersey Shore, or Philadelphia, one of the best parts about living in or visiting the city is realizing how quickly you can experience a change of scenery.

Some of these places are less than an hour away; others take a little more planning, but all of them can make you feel like you're on a weekend away in just one day.
